The Season of Giving

St. Anthony’s freshman Jonathan DeJesus reminds us this year that Christmas is the season of giving. DeJesus donated Legos, board games, dolls, magic sets, and Crayola art supplies to St. Anthony’s annual toy drive, professing what the Christmas season is all about. The dozens of toys generously donated by him will be given to kids in need. Most of which, unfortunately, do not have the money or the family to receive Christmas gifts like the rest of us. All the gifts donated consisted of a combination of old toys collected from his family members and new toys, which were purchased. By doing so, DeJesus shows us the importance of reusing what we no longer need instead of putting it to waste, and sacrificing our own fortune for the betterment of others. DeJesus explained that giving up what we want in order to give to others creates a better feeling inside us than anything we may have wanted in the first place. He said, “You might not be getting the top of the line video game, but you are getting the feeling of goodness that comes with giving,” and that is better than any gift we can ever receive. Jonathan DeJesus sets an example to all of us at St. Anthony’s High School, showing us not to mistake Christmas as a time of greed, want, and over indulgence, but rather a time of generosity and gratitude for our blessings.
