On Thursday, September 28th, the Friars boys’ soccer team tied the Chaminade Flyers 0-0 in a goalless finish. Both teams remain unbeaten after the match (2-0-1 league record), neither laying claim to first place in league rankings.
Friars assistant coach Don Corrao described the match as “a hard fought battle.” He explained, “playing there is always a challenge, given the dimensions of [Chaminade’s] field.” Corrao praised his defense, calling them “stout the entire match.”
The windy conditions and field dimensions made it very challenging for either team to get into a groove passing the ball. There were very few scoring opportunities for both teams and Saint Anthony’s goalkeeper Rob Leamey precluded any Flyer goals. Chaminade’s greatest scoring chance came in the twenty-third minute, when Flyers forward Brendan Slattery’s corner kick was deflected to the goal. However, Goalie Rob Leamey dove to his left and denied the Flyers from scoring. Leamey finished with five saves.
It has been almost a year since Chaminade ended Saint Anthony’s season in a heartbreaking fashion at the NSCHSAA Final, and the rivalry has never been more intense. Even though there are quite a few new faces on both of these Long Island powerhouses, each and every one of them has the same mindset—beating their rival. Both Saint Anthony’s and Chaminade were looking to build on wins, but neither team could capitalize.
Saint Anthony’s will be hosting Chaminade in the last week of the season, “We look forward to seeing them,” said coach Corrao. When Junior left wing Glenn McGiff commented on the 0-0 draw, he described the game with having “minimum chances.” “[The game] was played,” McGiff continued, “between the boxes with both teams looking even.”
Saint Anthony’s (7-0-2) will look to keep the defensive momentum going, as they host Saint John the Baptist on October 3rd at Cy Donnelly field.
