Throughout the week of October 9, 2017, students of Saint Anthony’s High School participated in “Americana Day”, “Color Wars”,, and “Black and Gold Day” to demonstrate their school spirit and enthusiasm. As spirit week came to a close and homecoming impendingly came upon us, the buzz of excitement for the upcoming event filled the hallways on Friday October 13. During school hours, the annual Pep Rally helped us prepare for homecoming, which would occur later that night.
To kick off Pep Rally, we began with the National Anthem and then groups such as the Football Chorus, the Symphonic Band, and the Rock and Roll Club with Brother Joshua, Mr. Engel, and Mr. Reynolds provided enthusiastic tunes to help set an environment of vigor and liveliness. After the stands and floor of the gymnasium were filled by Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors, the music died down to allow the speaker, Student Council President ,Olivia Gatto, to introduce the first performers: Varsity Cheer.
Smiling and perfectly in sync, the cheerleaders began the performance with a dance. As the act progressed, the moves that they executed became more complicated and impressive. Cheers erupted from the stands as the varsity cheerleaders accomplished sophisticated flip combinations and gymnastics moves. At the end of the exciting act, the cheerleaders left the mats to a loud applause from the students. After the mats were rolled up and tucked away, it was time for Kickline to take the floor.
Kickline initiated their presentation by dancing to a multitude of popular songs. When the girls started to form a kickline, the shapes that they formed were very impressive, one including a spinning pinwheel. When the act ended, all of the girls fell into simultaneous splits. Gasps of shock escaped the mouths of some of the freshmen as they witnessed the unexpected ending. Kickline’s entertaining performance received a long round of applause from the stands.
Before the long awaited Step Team performed, the captains of several varsity sports teams were called to announce the students on the team as well as a brief report of their overall progress throughout the season. Following this, Step Team took the stage, greeted with lively ovation.
The Step Team brought great sound to the gymnasium as they stomped, clapped, and snapped their way closer to homecoming. The sounds that the Step Team produced were not repetitive, making the act very entertaining and fun to watch. When they ended with a loud, cumulative stomp, the spectators cheered and clapped. After Step Team finished, several other varsity sports and their captains were announced.
The talented Celtic Friars’ Pipe Band followed the announcement, playing their bagpipes and drums to “America the Beautiful” and other widely-known songs. After the Celtic Friars marched out at the end of their remarkable presentation, it was finally time to announce the Homecoming Court.
After the varsity football team was introduced, the team members formed a pathway to welcome the nominees for Homecoming King and Homecoming Queen. The nominees for Homecoming King were Salvatore DeLisio, Ruoyan (Moses) Miao, Alexander Mustafich-Nutley, Nicholas Roveto, and Anthony Verdone. Nominees for Homecoming Queen included Miao Miao Deng, Christina Iovino, Sydney Leary, Jessica Riley-Weinberg, and Bridget Wehrle. After drum rolls and great suspense, the Homecoming King and Queen, Nicholas Roveto and Sydney Leary were announced! The Rally then closed with the singing of “America the Beautiful” lead by the Schola.
